Alien NIne

Okay, Alien Nine is a good anime and manga. But also a warning, the anime especially was a major emotion wrench, hitting me hard directly in my weak spots...

Loneliness... Feeling inept... Being forced into positions I never wanted... Crying a lot... Feeling impossible-seeming pressures... Being excluded from most of my peers, distant... Being a weak scarey-cat... Not wanting to get up from bed.

It's an anime/manga about grade-school girls catching aliens. It's awfully visceral for the premise. A silly story about aliens and little kids, told in a grown-up way that relieves the pains I went through in my childhood. I was a lot more like Yuri (the most weak, crying-prone character) than any of the other characters.

Twisted, too... Creepy pod-people style mind control. Yucky symbiosis with gross aliens helmets. Gore. Mysterious plots behind the whole 'Alien Party' fighting group thing. And, transformations into something no longer human.

Blended with strikingly sweet or even innocent moments, such as the well-timed summer vacation sequence. Even the creepy bits are sort of cute. Very sweet especially , some times.

And... okay, I won't tell how things turned out at the end of the three-volume manga series. Not quite close to absolutely bleak.

My reaction to this series was so personal that I really would have a hard time guessing how much most people would like it. It touched toward a lot of themes with very strong impacts on me, in terms of both emotional pain and fascination.

The main character... doesn't really stop whining and sniffling as she keeps trying... and trying... This made her far more understandable to me than most main characters. Take my word for it, she's not that exaggerated, she's pretty realistic.

While the comic form was pretty good, the animated form was what really lodged itself in my rib cage. It's also only about half of the manga-triology-of-volumes.

I feel like this post will never end. But I need to curl up and get some rest.

Good night.

If I ever visit you, if I ever do, I'm definitely bringing my 'Alien Nine Ultimate Collection' boxed set along. (It was a surprisingly good deal, cheaper than buying the individual manga volumes at Borders would've been plus I got the DVD too.)

There's also a sequel manga volume to the original trilogy, called 'The Emulators'. I've heard it's not quite as good, but still decent.
