Bad news!
My laptop isn't working right now. Hopefully all it takes is getting my hand on the OS X installation CDs/DVD again and doing disk permission repairs or the like.
My look up of the problem suggests hard drive issues. Hopefully, it's the relatively minor snag of disk permissions and not hardware malfunctions.
