Possibly odd question

This just stuck my mind. I don't recall anyone ever talking about pencils being occasionally unpleasant to use at certain angles. Like, when you hold it a certain way, you can feel it scraping in a nasty way as you write, a sort of vibration (that makes me want to grit my teeth just thinking of it). It seems to happen more when the pencil tip's more worn down. I've had to turn the pencil around so that I don't accidentally rub the bad point against the paper nearly as often, but I sometimes have to grimace while using pencils. I've also found scraping some metals to produce a similar feeling.

The main question is, does this happen to you? Is it a common experience or a rare one?

pencils being occasionally to use

Occasionally 'uncomfortable' to use?

Yeah that happens sometimes. Also using plastic utensils on styrofoam sometimes. And nails on a chalkboard...

Sure, although I don't ascribe specific pleasant or unpleasant sensations to the experience - it's just how pencils work.. The pencil tip flattens as you use it: gradually the line it leaves widens, and the angle of incidence between the graphite and the paper changes. How it 'feels' depends on how worn the pencil tip is, how hard or soft the lead is, and how much tooth the paper has.

Some artists lightly rotate the pencil as they draw lines, to ensure the line thickness doesn't change as they draw, especially with softer pencils - that would also keep the tip less chiseled, which might reduce the unpleasant feel for you.

That's what I've long since learned to do -- use the side in such a way that I instinctively rotate it for a controlled line. If it's making a nasty sound and/or vibrating, it's hitting the wood particle... and, yeah, that's not pleasant, especially in a quiet drawing studio!
