Incidentally, a note to anyone who wants to learn sign language...

When do people learn languages?

A good look at the realities behind language acquisition. For example, my ex picked up modest sign language in a few months by both attending sign language classes and talking more or less regularly with me. I found her learning speed remarkable enough. On the other hand, those of my extended relatives who're been studying sign language for years never really progressed, in good part due to lack of applications (they don't see me often enough for that, generally only at some holidays and such).

nifty article, thank you for the linkingness :)
it makes sense, i took french for 9 years in school, and would be lost trying to speak with anyone in french. i can get the general idea of things written in french often, but i wouldn't want to rely on that for anything important... i've been using ASL regularly for.. *thinks* a year or so, and i'm a lot more comfortable in ASL than french...
(though i dunno about the tips, i don't have many books written in ASL to read, nor do i think playing tapes in ASL in the car would be particularly safe... ;))
