Random futurism-necromancy dream

The world: generic sci-trek, a bit touched by Star trek for the academy-notion thingk, a bit touched by Babylon Five for the grit. Generic up until when one of the characters went and consulted with a dead old women, who was mostly a shrunken floating torso with arms and head, interjoined with a mass of plant (with slight roots drifting off the bottom. This dead old women is the only dead person the 'main character' can talk with. The 'main character' hates dead people, and the dead plant-woman resents that, but they work together for usefulness. The two perform a ritual after the live woman swipes her card which she had stored some 'instant mana' on.
It turns out her sister (or such) was poisoned by her father, who was deceived by her mother, and the news had some sort of bug on the living woman, so it turned into an instant scandal.

Ooh, can I steal one of those ideas? (the mana-credit card, to be specific)

Certainly, you can! I like seeing that kind of mood more, the meshing of magic-tech.

Have either of you read any Jonathan Lethem?
